    Judaea Subjugated

Vespasian (AD 69-79). Orichalcum sestertius (33mm, 26.82 gm, 7h). NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 2/5, smoothing. Rome, AD 71. IMP CAES VESPAS AVG P M TR P P P COS III, laureate head of Vespasian right / IVDAEA CAPTA around, S C in exergue, bearded Jew standing right facing palm tree, his hands tied behind his back, shield, trident (!) and helmet (or pileus) on spear; on other side of tree veiled female figure (Judaea) seated right on cuirass in attitude of mourning, resting left elbow on knee and supporting head with her left hand. RIC 233. Hendin 1509a. Glossy green-brown patina, somewhat smoothed in spots. With a powerful imperial portrait and an evocative reverse "celebrating" the subjugation of Judaea.

Ex Goldberg 74 (4 June 2013), lot 3501; "Arden Collection," purchased by Antiqua in the mid-1980s.

This magnificent Judaea Capta sestertius is part of the propaganda campaign touting Vespasian's victory in the Jewish War. The figure of Judaea is shown in an attitude of mourning, while a captive Jewish warrior behind stands with his hands bound behind his back, destined from slavery or death in the Roman arena. Such images, while supremely brutal to modern eyes, were to the Romans justified and indeed glorious, the rebellious Jews having broken faith with their overlords and killed tens of thousands of Roman soldiers and civilians. The IVDAEA CAPTA propaganda helped consolidate Vespasian's hold on power in the wake of the disastrous civil wars of AD 69.
