    Remarkable Carthage Trihemistater

ZEUGITANIA. Carthage. Time of First Punic War, ca. 264-241 BC. EL trihemistater (23mm, 10.89 gm, 11h). Head of Tanit left, wreathed with grain ears, hair drawn into multiple coils and tendrils at back of head, wearing triple-pendant earring and necklace with 10 pendants / Horse standing right, double uraeus to either side of radiant solar disk above, three pellets on ground line before rear hoof, two behind. Jenkins & Lewis Group 10a, 414. SNG Copenhagen 182. Very rare! Some obverse roughness, reverse graffito IK above horse, otherwise an impressive and extraordinary piece, struck on a broad flan. NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 3/5, graffito.

The First Punic War between Carthage and Rome produced more death and destruction than any previous conflict. The impact on the world's economy was also profound. Carthage produced a number of new coin designs and denominations to draw mercenary soldiers into her service, including this remarkable electrum trihemistater (weighing 1.5 staters) bearing a quasi-Egyptian solar disk flanked by serpents above the proud Punic horse.
