Alexius I Comnenus (AD 1081-1118). EL/AR histamenon nomisma (29mm, 4.30 gm, 6h). NGC (photo-certificate) Choice AU 3/5 - 4/5, die shift. Thessalonica, 1081-1084. + KЄ RO-ALEZ', facing bust of Christ, wearing nimbus cruciger, pallium and colobium, right hand raised in benediction, book of Gospels in left / ΔI/MI/TI to left, Δ/ЄC/Π/TI/TH to right, nimbate figure of of Saint Demetrius facing right, presenting labarum to Alexius I standing facing, wearing crown with pendilia and loros. Sear 1904 (as extremely rare). DOC 4.

    From the Morris Collection.

DOC IV, with commentary by M. F. Hendy, refers to this issue as the first coinage in several centuries from the Thessalonica mint, which Alexius reopened as he passed through in September 1081 on his way to confront the invading Norman under Robert Guiscard. Hendy asserts this type was discontinued in 1082, when a heavily debased type with patriarchal cross replacing the labarum was introduced. However, after DOC IV was published more specimens of the type have appeared on the market and it now seems this type was struck for at least the entire duration of the first Norman war, 1081-1084.

    Estimate: $400 - $500.
