From the Collection of a Philhellene. Ex Classical Numismatic Group, Auction 51 (15 September 1999), lot 1755.

A cousin of Manuel I Comnenus, Andronicus had led the life of a poor, itinerant adventurer before seizing the throne from the legitimate heirs of Manuel, riding on a wave of anti-Latin sentiment. An early sort of communist revolutionary, he promised to protect and enrich the peasantry by seizing and redistributing the wealth of the landed aristocrats. Predictably, it all went spectacularly awry. The ruling aristocracy refused to participate in his government, leaving the armies leaderless. With the frontiers undefended, invasions came from Hungary and the German Empire of Frederick Barbarossa, who brutally sacked Thessalonica. The mob that had raised Andronicus to power turned on him and tore him to shreds, bringing the illustrious Comnenan dynasty to a tawdry end.
