    Rare Constantine IV Ceremonial Issue Miliaresion

    Constantine IV Pogonatus (AD 668-685). AR miliaresion (20mm, 3.80 gm, 7h). NGC VF 3/5 - 3/5. Ceremonial issue, AD 669-674. D N CONS-A-NUS P P, beardless, cuirassed bust of Constantine IV facing slightly right, wearing plumed helmet, spear in right hand over shoulder, shield decorated with horseman motif in left / Cross potent set on globe set on three steps; palm fronds flanking. cf. Sear 1164-1165. Extremely rare.

    Sear 1164 is described as beardless portrait, no shield and two steps on the reverse, and 1165 as bearded, holding shield and three steps on the reverse. This examples has a combination of the two, as on one other example found in sales archives (Harlan Berk, Buy or Bid Sale 181, 7 November 2012, lot 634, realized $3,500).
