    Description

    Best Portrait Style

Constantine IV Pogonatus (AD 668-685). AV solidus (19mm, 4.45 gm, 7h). Constantinople, 681-685. P CONST-N-ATS P P A, helmeted and cuirassed bust facing slightly right, holding spear over shoulder and shield decorated with soldier on horseback motif / VICTORA AVGU, cross potent set on three steps; Є//CON[OB]. The later gold coinage of Constantine IV shows a remarkable return to an earlier, more humanistic portrait style last seen early in the reign of Justinian.
