    Description

    Imitative Issue

Heraclius (AD 610-641), with Heraclius Constantine (AD 613-641) and Heraclonas as Caesar (AD 632-638). AV solidus (21mm, 4.46 gm, 5h). Imitative issue from unknown Balkan mint, copying a Constantinople issue of the 5th officina, AD 632-635/6. No legend, full-length ligures of (from left) Heraclonas, Heraclius, and Heraclius Constantine standing facing, each wearing long robe and holding globus cruciger; all but Heraclonas crowned; cross to upper left / VICTOFHA AΣЧ (sic), cross potent set on three steps; monogram to right, Є//CONOB. Cf. Sear 758, DOC 33 and MIB 39 for prototypes. Identifiable as imitative by the crude figures, blundered legend and roughly prepared reverse fields. Extremely rare contemporary copy! NGC Choice MS? 4/5 - 5/5.

Ex. Collection of Dr. Lawrence A. Adams; ex CNG 35 (20 September 1995), lot 1293.
