From The Andre Constantine Dimitriadis Collection. Ex William Herbert Hunt Collection Part I (Sotheby's New York, 5-6 December 1990), lot 927.

From a prominent provincial family, Isaac Angeles was acclaimed emperor after the downfall and murder of Andronicus I. He tried to restore the rapidly deteriorating situation, but the chaos proved unmanageable, with foreign invasions and pretenders springing up on every front. Fearful of the impending Third Crusade, Isaac made a treaty of alliance with Fatamid Egypt, which the Western powers looked upon as the ultimate betrayal. The complexities of his and the following two reigns are too intricate to relate here; suffice it to say that the tribulations ultimately brought about the unthinkable: The diversion of the Fourth Crusade to attack Byzantium and the Latin conquest of Constantinople in 1204.

This coin from the Dimitriadis Collection has been issued a photo-certificate by NGC. It may be sent in for encapsulation after the auction at the request of the buyer, free of charge. E-mail SamS@HA.com if you would like to utilize this option.
