Sear 1938. DOC 1a. Well struck on a broad flan. NGC (photo-certificate) AU 4/5 - 5/5.

From The Andre Constantine Dimitriadis Collection. Ex William Herbert Hunt Collection (Sotheby's New York, 5-6 December 1990), lot 908.

Eldest son of Alexius I, John II continued and expanded the recovery in Byzantine fortunes that his father had begun. He saw his great task as reclaiming the Anatolian heartland that had been lost to the Seljuqs a century before, which he undertook by nearly annual campaigns. At the same time he dealt successfully with the Serbians, Hungarians, Venetians, Normans and Crusader states by a mixture of diplomacy and military might. Conscientious and just, he was beloved by the Byzantine populace, who called him "John the Good." By the end of his reign much of Anatolia had also been recovered and it seemed only "mopping up" operations remained. But in April 1143 he was severely injured in a hunting accident and died after naming his fourth son, Manuel Comnenus, as his successor.
