    Justin I and Justinian I (AD 527). AV solidus (22mm, 4.49 gm, 6h). Constantinople, 10th officina, April-August AD 527. D N IVSTIN ЄT IVSTINIAN P P AV, Justin and Justinian seated facing on throne with straight sides, holding globes; cross above, CONOB in exergue / VICTORI-A AVCCC, angel standing facing, holding jeweled cross in right hand and globus cruciger in left; star to right; I //CONOB. Sear 115. DOC 1 variant (officina). MIBE 2a. Very rare! NGC MS 5/5 - 4/5. 

    Late in his  nine-year reign, Justin I felt his health failing and adopted his nephew as co-Augustus to solidify the succession. The young man ascended the throne as Flavius Justinianus, thus launching the reign of the greatest of the early Byzantine rulers. The joint reign lasted barely five months and produced only a handful of coins depicting both rulers, including this attractive example.
