    Description

    Unique Bearded Variety?

Justin II (AD 565-578). AV solidus (21mm, 4.41 gm, 5h). NGC Choice MS ★ 5/5 - 5/5. Constantinople or Thessalonica, AD 565-567. D N I-VSTI-NVS PP AVI, diademed, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Justin facing, lightly bearded, holding globus surmounted by crowning Victory in right hand and shield decorated with soldier on horseback motif on left arm / VICTORI A AVCCC, Constantinopolis seated facing on throne, head right, holding spear in right hand and globus cruciger in left; CONOB in exergue. Sear 344 or 364D variant. DO -. MIB -. Apparently an extremely rare and possibly unrecorded variety! Well struck and lustrous.

The lack of an officina number ar the end of the reverse legend is notable, as well as the bearded portrait. Some numismatists attribute the rare bearded variety to the beginning of the reign, when Justin was shown with a beard of mourning for his uncle Justinian I. Sear 344 of Constantinople is bearded, but all known examples carry an officina letter; Sear 364D, attributed to Thessalonica, has a similar reverse to this example, with thin lettering and no officina letter, but the portrait is beardless.
