    Description

    Alexandria Mint?

Justin II (AD 565-578). AV solidus (21mm, 4.52 gm, 6h).  Alexandria(?), possibly dated Indictional Year 10 (AD 576/7). DN I-VSTI-NVS PP AVG, pearl-diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed bust of Justin facing, holding in right hand small figure of Victory holding wreath on globe, and on left arm shield with horseman motif / VICTORI-A AVCCC I(indictional year?), Constantinopolis seated facing, head turned right, holding spear and globus cruciger, cross in left field, CONOB in exergue. Sear 347 (Constantinople). DOC 6. MIB 13b. Rare. NGC (photo-certificate) MS 5/5 - 5/5.

From The Andre Constantine Dimitriadis Collection. Ex Harlan J. Berk BBS 83 (26 October 1994), lot 29.

Though Sear and DO tentatively assign this issue to Constantinople, most other experts have noted it is of different style and fabric than regular issues of the capital and must be assigned to a provincial mint, with Alexandria being the most likely candidate. Almost all the known examples have an I in the spot normally assigned to the officinal letter; this would normally be for the 10th officina in a Constantinople issue but it almost certainly has some other meaning on this type, perhaps an indictional date of 10.

This coin from the Dimitriadis Collection has been issued a photo-certificate by NGC. It may be sent in for encapsulation after the auction at the request of the buyer, free of charge. E-mail SamS@HA.com if you would like to utilize this option.
