From The Andre Constantine Dimitriadis Collection. Ex Stack's (New York, December 1991), lot 84.

The nephew of Justinian I the Great, Justin II had none of his uncle's abilities as ruler. His every action had an unintended consequence detrimental to the state. He tried to economize by both cutting back on the size of the army and ending tribute payments to the Persians; this only caused renewed war with the Sasanians in AD 572 and a series of defeats for the East Romans. In Italy, he failed to pay the army and was thus unprepared when the Lombards invaded and swept down the peninsula. The accumulating troubles unhinged his mind and by 574 he was intermittently raving mad.  During one of his lucid intervals, his wife Sophie induced him to adopt an able general, Tiberius Constantine, as Caesar and effective regent, saving the state from utter ruin.

This coin from the Dimitriadis Collection has been issued a photo-certificate by NGC. It may be sent in for encapsulation after the auction at the request of the buyer, free of charge. E-mail SamS@HA.com if you would like to utilize this option.
