    Rare Light Solidus

Justinian I the Great (AD 527-565). AV lightweight solidus (22mm, 3.75 gm, 6h).  Constantinople, 10th officina, AD 545-565. D N IVSTINI-AVS P P AVG, pearl-diademed, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Justinian facing, holding globus cruciger in right hand and shield decorated with horseman riding down enemy on left arm / VICTORI-A AVGGG, angel standing facing, holding long staff topped by staurogram and globus cruciger; star to right; I//OB XX. Sear 142. DOC 10. MIB 15. Very rare! NGC (photo-certificate) Choice XF 4/5 - 4/5.

From The Andre Constantine Dimitriadis Collection. Ex Stack's (New York, June 1996), lot 75.

The formula OB XX in place of the usual CONOB seems to represent OBryzum Viginti Siliquae, or "gold of 20 siliquae." A full weight solidus was tariffed at 24 siliquae. The reason for the striking of gold solidi on a lighter standard than the traditional solidus of about 4.5 grams remains something of a mystery. The coins may have been intended specifically for external trade, as most are found beyond the official frontiers or the Empire.

This coin from the Dimitriadis Collection has been issued a photo-certificate by NGC. It may be sent in for encapsulation after the auction at the request of the buyer, free of charge. E-mail if you would like to utilize this option.
