    Description

    Dated Italian Issue?

Justinian I the Great (AD 527-565). AV solidus (21mm, 4.34 gm, 6h).  Uncertain Italian mint, dated RY 20 (AD 546/7). D N IVSTINI-AVS P P AVG, pearl-diademed, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Justinian facing, holding globus cruciger in right hand and shield decorated with horseman riding down enemy on left arm / VICTORI-A AVCCC K (regnal date?), angel standing facing, holding long staff topped by staurogram and globus cruciger; star to right; CONOB in exergue. Sear 140 variant. DOC 9 variant. MIB 7 variant. Ricotti Prina 2 var (different letter at end of reverse inscription). NGC (photo-certificate) Choice AU 5/5 - 3/5, light marks.

From The Andre Constantine Dimitriadis Collection. Ex "An Important Private Collection of Byzantine Coins" (Sotheby's, New York, 2 November 1998), lot 91.

This puzzling issue generally follows the types of the huge Constantinople issue of AD 545-565 (Sear 140), but the style suggests an Italian origin and the letter K at the end of the reverse legend cannot be an officina letter (no officina K is elsewhere recorded) and is likely a Greek numeral to represent the regnal year 20 (AD 546/7). Diego Ricotti Prina's argument that the "officina" letter on this series is an indictional date is unlikely in this case as the Indiction was a 15-year cycle and the years did not go above 15 (IE).

This coin from the Dimitriadis Collection has been issued a photo-certificate by NGC. It may be sent in for encapsulation after the auction at the request of the buyer, free of charge. E-mail SamS@HA.com if you would like to utilize this option.
