    Justinian I the Great (AD 527-565). AV solidus (21mm, 4.36 gm, 6h).  Thessalonica, AD 527-537. D N IVSTINI-ANVS P P AVG, pearl-diademed, helmet and cuirassed bust facing, head slightly right, holding spear over right shoulder and, on left arm, shield decorated with motif of horseman spearing fallen enemy / VICTORI-A AVCCC, Victory standing left, holding long jeweled cross, stars in left and right fields, CONOB in exergue. Sear 173A. DOC --. MIB 20. Metcalf, Thessalonica, 279 (this coin). Rare. NGC (photo-certificate) AU 5/5 - 3/5, wrinkled.

    From The Andre Constantine Dimitriadis Collection. Ex "An Important Private Collection of Byzantine Coins" (Sotheby's, 2 November 1998), lot 75; Hess (1983), lot 350. 

    The obverse die for this coin was obviously recut from a die for Justin I, with the additional letters NI-A rather awkwardly inserted.
