The fourth son of John II, Manuel I presided over the apogee of the 12th century Comnenan restoration. Intelligent, capable, and cultured, he was more broad-minded than his father and sought ways to cooperate with the emerging powers in Western Christendom. He admired Western ways and even staged jousting tournaments in the Hippodrome, to the consternation of many Byzantines. He tried to re-assert Byzantine power in southern Italy and Sicily, but here the Western powers came against him and forced his retreat. His father's great task of reconquering Anatolia seemed all but complete when the Seljuq Sultan offered to accept vassal status; however Manuel demanded absolute surrender and staked all on a battle at Myriokephalon in 1176, which ended in total Byzantine defeat. After that, all the hard-won gains of his dynasty began to unravel.
