    Legend Deliberately Effaced?

Nicephorus II Phocas (AD 963-969) with Basil II. AV histamenon nomisma (21mm, 4.57 gm, 6h).  + IhS XPS REX REGNANTIVM', bust of Christ facing, nimbus with three pellets in each limb, wearing pallium and colobium, raising right hand in blessing and holding Book of Gospels in left /  Reverse legend deliberately obscured, busts facing of Nicephorus II, with short beard, on left, wearing crown and loros, and Basil II, beardless on right, wearing crown and chlamys, holding long patriarchal cross between them.  Fueg (SNR 76, 1997) pl. IV, B4. Cf. DO 15.22. . Cf. Sear 1751 (Constantine VII and Romanus I) and 1776 (Nicephorus II). Very rare. Extremely Fine.

As noted by Fueg in SNR 76, the reverse legend on this issue has been deliberately obscured, likely during the transition from the brief reign of Romanus II to that of the general Nicephorus II. A new, handsome bust of Christ occupied the obverse but the reverse seems to be a reused die of Constantine VII and Romanus I (Sear 1751), with the legend effaced by adding punch marks over each letter to make it illegible. A very similar die was shortly produced naming Nicephorus along with the young Basil II.
