    Description

Unpublished Theodosius III Adramytium Syracuse Follis

Theodosius III Adramytium (AD 715-717). AE follis (22mm, 3.53 gm, 6h). NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 4/5. Syracuse, ca. AD 715-716. Facing bust of Theodosius III, slightly bearded, wearing crown and loros with lozenge pattern, patriarchal cross on globe in right hand, cruciform scepter in left diagonally across front of body / Large M; monogram above, star below, SCL in exergue. Sear -, cf. 1495. DOC -, cf 2.2, 7.

This magnificent specimen is unlike other Syracuse folles of Theodosius III, as the emperor is holding in his left hand a cruciform scepter instead of an akakia. Although extremely rare, with less than ten examples in sales archives, Sear 1495 is the type with akakia and the hand position shows the device both very short and with rounded ends - the usual depiction of this cylindrical cloth roll containing dust and held by the emperor during ceremonies. Currently the only Theodosius III follis of any kind certified by NGC. A wonderful addition to any Byzantine collection and sure to inspire spirited bidding.

From the Collection of a Philhellene. Ex Gorny & Mosch, Auction 107 (2 April 2001), lot 674 (realized about $1,133).
