    Consular Bust

Tiberius II Constantine (AD 578-582). AV solidus (21mm, 4.43 gm, 6h). Constantinople, AD 578-579. [CONSTA]NT A ЧC ЧIЧ FЄLIX, crowned facing bust wearing consular robes, holding mappa in right hand and eagle and cross tipped scepter in left / [ЧICTOR] TI-bЄRI AЧΣ, cross potent set on four steps; CONOB I in exergue. Sear 420 variant (I after CONOB). DOC 2 variant (same). MIB 2. Berk 75 (this coin). NGC (photo-certificate) Choice AU 3/5 - 3/5.

From The Andre Constantine Dimitriadis Collection. Ex "An Important Private Collection of Byzantine Coins" (Sotheby's, 2 November 1998), lot 123; Bonham's (London, 3 December 1980), lot 51.

A talented soldier, Tiberius II Constantine strove hard to stem the tide of defeat and invasion on all imperial fronts. With military resources limited, the Slavs pushing into Greece, the Lombards laying siege to Ravenna, and the Persians invading Armenia, he had his hands full. Temporarily buying off the Slavs and Lombards, he concentrated on the Persian front and was rewarded when his general Maurice won a notable victory. Free-spending where Justin had been overly frugal, Tiberius seems to have tried an early version of "stimulus spending" which nearly bankrupted the state. Charismatic and affable, Tiberius perhaps deserved a longer reign, but fell ill after eating some poorly prepared (or possibly poisoned) food. He died after naming his protege Maurice as his successor.

This coin from the Dimitriadis Collection has been issued a photo-certificate by NGC. It may be sent in for encapsulation after the auction at the request of the buyer, free of charge. E-mail SamS@HA.com if you would like to utilize this option.
