    Description

Justinian II, A.D. 705-711 (second reign). AV solidus minted at Constantinople, A.D. 705. Bust of Christ facing, with close beard and curly hair, cross behind head, right hand raised in benediction, holding book of Gospels in left/Bust of Justinian facing, wearing crown and loros, and holding cross potent on three steps in right hand, patriarchal cross on globus inscribed PAX in left. 4.35 g. D.O. 1, MIB 1. MS61 ICG, weakly struck at left obverse legend.
Numismatically, Justinian II's two reigns are quite remarkable. Thirteen years earlier, Justinian introduced a majestic bust of Christ on the obverse of his solidi, while the emperor was relegated to the reverse. That was the earliest instance of the portrayal of Christ on coinage, if we discount that it is perhaps Christ who is blessing the marriage of Marcian and Pulcheria on a rare commemorative solidus of A.D. 450. On this second-reign solidus of Justinian II, we see Christ not as Pantocrator, but Jesus as a youth. Perhaps this representation was copied from a Syrian portrait icon.
