    Description

Justinian II, A.D. 705-711 (second reign). AV solidus minted at Constantinople, A.D. 705-708. Bust of Christ facing, with close beard and curly hair, cross behind head, right hand raised in benediction, holding book of Gospels in left/Facing crowned busts of Justinian, bearded, and Tiberius, much smaller, on right, holding between them cross potent on two steps. 4.42 g. D.O. 2a, MIB 2a. MS63 ICG.
Tiberius, the son of Justinian and the Khazar princess Theodora, was elevated to Augustus when just an infant. This dynamic hope of Justinian was not to materialize, as both he and his six-year-old son were murdered in a revolution led by the Armenian general Bardanes, who became the emperor Philippicus, ruling from A.D. 711-713.
