Nicephorus I, A.D. 802-811. AV solidus minted at Constantinople. Crowned bust of Nicephorus facing wearing chlamys and holding cross potent and akakia/Crowned bust of Stauracius facing, wearing crown and chlamys and holding globus cruciger and akakia. 4.38 g. D.O. 2. EF; rare.
The chlamys or paludamentum was a short cloak worn by men. Its military implication contrasts with that of the akakia, which was derived from the mappa, or rolled napkin, being an attribute of the consuls.
