    Description

Romanus III, A.D. 1028-1034. AV histamenon nomisma minted at Constantinople. Christ enthroned, facing, holding book of Gospels/The Virgin crowning the emperor. 4.40 g. D.O. 1, Ratto 1972. VF+, the obverse a bit doubled.
Want to know more about Michael "the Drunkard" or the Byzantine Empress who played chess with Charlemagne? How about the emperor who died in his bath (Romanus III) or the Macedonian peasant who became emperor? One of the best one-volume historical references is History of the Byzantine State by George Ostrogorsky. For the eleventh century, I'd suggest the firsthand, contemporary account of the period by Michael Psellus. Originally named Chronographia, it is available in a fine English translation retitled Fourteen Byzantine Rulers. (PCGS# 100834)
