    Description

ASIA MINOR or SYRIA. Imitating Athens. Ca. 430-410 BC. AR/Æ fourrée tetradrachm (22mm. 13.02 gm, 9h).
Head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet ornamented with three laurel leaves and vine scroll / ΑΘΕ, owl standing right, head facing, olive sprig and crescent moon behind, all within incuse square. Cf. Kroll 9. Cf. SNG Copenhagen 31. Several breaks in silver plating revealing copper core. Very Fine.

    From the R.G. Collection.

This plated tetradrachm is almost certainly a contemporary counterfeit, as opposed to an official "emergency" issue. The style is quite "eastern" and it is likely the counterfeiter used locally produced "owls" minted in Asia Minor, Syria and Phoenicia as the prototype.
