Description
Atrebates. Verica (ca. AD 10-40). AV stater (5.33 gm). Atrebatic K (Vine leaf type). VI-RI, vine leaf / C-O-F, celticized horseman galloping right, holding shield and spear; 'boxes' symbol below. Hobbs 1159-66. Van Arsdell 520-1. SCBC 121. Rose gold. Deeply struck and good extremely fine. From the W.B. and R.E. Montgomery Collection.
Verica, a king of the Atrebates along the southern coast of Britain, apparently ruled from the locale of the later Fishbourne Roman Palace in west Sussex. He seems to have enjoyed friendly relations with Rome. His territories were overrun by Caratacus in about 40 BC, and Verica's appeal to Rome for help provided the pretext for Claudius' invasion of the island in AD 43.
