    Description

ATTICA, Athens. Ca. 500/490-485/0 BC. AR tetradrachm (16.96 gm). Archaic helmeted head of Athena with frontal eye / [A]ΘE, owl with wings folded standing right, head facing; behind, olive-spray with three leaves; all within incuse square. Seltman group Gii, uncertain dies (but cf. 214, dies A146/P169). Asyut group IVf, 336. Darkly toned. Very fine.

An attractive example of the early tetradrachms of Athens that evolved into the paramount international trade coinage of the eastern Mediterranean world. Athenian tetradrachms were used in commerce and to pay mercenary armies as far afield as the Persian Empire, the Southern Levant, and Egypt. The Attic weight standard used for these coins became so widely recognized that it was adopted form many other local coinages and even the imperial issues of Alexander the Great.
