Description

BACTRIA. Early Hellenistic era. Sophytes (ca. 325/305-294 BC). AR didrachm (20mm, 7.95 gm, 6h). NGC Choice AU 4/5 - 3/5, Fine Style, die shift. Uncertain mint in the Oxus region, ca. 246-235 BC, Attic standard. Head of Sophytes or Seleucus I(?) right, wearing laureate crested Attic helmet, cheek flaps decorated with wings, the crest decorated with guilloche pattern; MNA on bust truncation / ΣΩΦYΤΟΥ, cock standing right; caduceus in upper left field. Bopearachchi, Sophytes Series 3A, pl. I, 2. Cf. HGC 12, 3 (drachm). Cf. SNG ANS 21-23 (same). Cf. Mitchiner 29 (same). High relief and nicely centered with a pleasant ivory backlight.
