CALABRIA. Tarentum. Time of Pyrrhus of Epirus (ca. 281-272 BC). AR stater or nomos (21mm, 6.46 gm, 11h). Gu-, Sostratos, and Poly-, magistrates. Warrior on horseback right, nude save for helmet, holding shield and two spears in left hand, brandishing spear held in right hand; ΓΥ behind, ΣΩΣΤΡAΤΟΣ below / Taras astride dolphin left, holding Nike and cornucopia; thunderbolt behind, ΠΟΛΥ before, TAPAΣ below. Vlasto 714. HN Italy 1001. SNG ANS 1037. A lovely piece, deeply struck on a broad flan, with wonderful iridescent toning. NGC Choice AU? 5/5 - 5/5.From the Northern California Collection
