Neapolis (modern Naples) was one of the earliest Greek colonies in Italy, having begun in the ninth century BC as a Rhodian trading post called Parthenope on the mall island of Megaride (now a peninsula) in the gulf of Naples. In the sixth century the colonists founded a "new city" (nea polis) on the mainland and it grew rapidly as an ally and trading partner of Syracuse in Sicily and, later, the rising Roman Republic. A thriving port and high, stout walls ensured its survival and prosperity. As center of Greek art and culture, its coinage is among the most artistically accomplished in Magna Graecia. This beautiful silver didrachm depicts a delicately rendered head of Parthenope, one of the Sirens of Greek mythology and namesake of the colony from which Neapolis grew.
