    Description

    Rare Large-Flan Miletus

IONIA. Miletus. Ca. 170-160 BC. AR tetradrachm (32mm, 16.68 gm, 12h). NGC XF 4/5 - 4/5. Epikrates and Krateros, magistrates. Laureate head of Apollo to right, hair falling in two loose curls to shoulders / MIΛHΣIΩN above, KPATEPOΣ to right, Lion standing right, head turned back to look at star in field above, EΠIKPATHΣ in exergue. Deppert-Lippitz 763. Very rare, one of perhaps four known specimens with these magistrates and fewer than a dozen for the entire series. Struck on an immense flan and lightly toned, almost certainly the finest example extant of this type.

From the Northern California Collection. Acquired from Freeman & Sear, 2003.

The rare broad-flan issues of Miletus and a handful of other cities in Asia Minor, struck in the early decades of the second century BC, can be viewed as the predecessors of the beautiful "stephanophoric" ("wreath-bearer") tetradrachms struck in huge quantities by cities of the same region in the mid-second century.
