A simply beautiful example of this rare and attractive issue, fully struck up, with a magnificent head of Artemis and magnificent deep gray-iridescent toning. Likely the finest known example.

From the Northern California Collection. Acquired from Freeman & Sear, 2004; ex CGB.Fr. Auction 18 (19 June 2003), lot 60; "from a Paris private collection held for 30 years."

This rare tetradrachm type was issued following the Macedonian revolt against Roman rule led by Philip Andriscus in 148 BC. LEG refers not to Roman legions or legates (generals), but to the term Legatio, or embassy: After Roman legions crushed the army of Andriscus, a Senatorial embassy (signified by the hand holding the olive branch) attempted to establish equitable peace terms with the Macedonians. The combination of Greek and Latin lettering and terminology points to the dual nature of this limited coinage.
