Description
Macedonian Kingdom. Perseus. 179-168 B.C. AR drachm (16 mm, 2.56 g). Third Macedonian War issue, struck in Thessaly ca. 171/0 B.C. Hermias, magistrate. Head of Helios facing slightly right / Rose with bud to right. M. J. Price, "The Larissa, 1968 Hoard (IGCH 237)" KME, pl. LV, 247; SNG Keckman 793. Toned XF, good metal and well struck. R. Ashton, "A Series of Pseudo-Rhodian Drachms from Mainland Greece," NC (1988), pp. 29-30, persuasively argues that because of familiarity with Rhodian coinage circulating in Crete, these Rhodian style drachms were issued by Perseus to pay his Cretan mercenaries during the Third Macedonian War.Auction Info
