Description

Macedonian Kingdom. Perseus. 179-168 B.C. AR drachm (16 mm, 2.56 g). Third Macedonian War issue, struck in Thessaly ca. 171/0 B.C. Hermias, magistrate. Head of Helios facing slightly right / Rose with bud to right. M. J. Price, "The Larissa, 1968 Hoard (IGCH 237)" KME, pl. LV, 247; SNG Keckman 793. Toned XF, good metal and well struck. R. Ashton, "A Series of Pseudo-Rhodian Drachms from Mainland Greece," NC (1988), pp. 29-30, persuasively argues that because of familiarity with Rhodian coinage circulating in Crete, these Rhodian style drachms were issued by Perseus to pay his Cretan mercenaries during the Third Macedonian War.
