    Description

PARTHIAN KINGDOM. Vologases I (first reign, ca. AD 50-54/5). BIL tetradrachm (14.42 gm). Seleukeia on the Tigris, SE 364 (52/3). Diademed bust left, torque around neck / King seated right, receiving crown from Tyche who holds cornucopiae. Assar 416 (types), cf. 419 (dated 362). NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 3/5.

Holdered as a coin of Gotarzes II (ca. 44-51), but to judge by the SE date a coin minted under Vologases I, for whom Assar records a tetradrachm dated SE 362.  This specimen might be deemed a hybrid, with an obverse of Gotarzes II being coupled with a reverse of Vologases I; the portraits are very similar, but there are differences in the diadem:  only Gotarzes II has a loop at the temple, and only Vologases I has two loops behind; there is also a difference in the torque, with only Vologases I having a square design superimposed on it at the throat.  Since however the king is seated right on the one reverse of Gotarzes II in Assar, as here, whereas he is seated left on the later tetradrachms, one might to that extent judge this specimen not technically a hybrid, since both obverse and reverse types belong to Gotarzes II, although it is dated to the reign of Vologases I.  In short, either the reign of Gotarzes must be extended, or a tetradrachm was struck for Vologases with types of Gotarzes.
