Description

Pontic Kingdom. Mithradates VI. 120-63 B.C. AV stater (20 mm, 8.34 g, 12 h). Tomis, ca. 88-86 B.C. Diademed head of Alexander the Great right, wearing horn of Ammon / Athena seated left on throne, holding Nike and resting elbow on grounded shield. De Callatay, p. 141 (D4/R-; unlisted reverse die); AMNG I 2476; SNG Copenhagen 1093. Near XF, lustrous.

This stater resurrects the old types of Lysimachos because of their wide recognition and acceptability in the Black Sea region and because of Mithradates' personal desire to appear to cast himself as a new Alexander defending the civilized Greek world against the Roman barbarian. The coin was probably struck to pay mercenaries during the First Mithradatic War, which ultimately ended with Mithradates' defeat but failed to extinguish the Pontic king's desire to drive the Romans out of the Greek East.
