    Rare Ptolemy V Portrait

PTOLEMAIC EGYPT. Ptolemy V Epiphanes (205/4-180 BC). AR tetradrachm (26mm, 14.10 gm, 12h). Military mint in Phoenicia(?). Diademed and draped bust of the young Ptolemy V right / ΠTOΛEMAIOY BAΣIΛEΩΣ, eagle with folded wings standing left on thunderbolt. Svoronos  --, cf.1280 (NI between eagle's legs). O. Mørkholm, "Portrait Coinage of Ptolemy V," Essays Thompson, cf. Group I, - (A2/P -). Rare, particularly so with no reverse controls! With a wonderful portrait and gorgeous light golden toning. NGC AU 5/5 - 4/5, Fine Style.

The reign of Ptolemy V, who became king at the age of six, ushered in a period of great difficulty for the Ptolemaic kingdom. Realizing that Ptolemy and his advisors were ineffectual, Philip V of Macedon and the Seleukid king, Antiochos III, entered into a pact to carve up the Ptolemaic dominions outside of Egypt. Additionally, there were native revolts under the leadership of secessionist pharaohs of Upper Egypt, as recorded on the famous Rosetta Stone. Numismatically the most notable development of the reign is Ptolemy V's use of his own youthful portrait on his tetradrachms, temporarily replacing of the monotonous but traditional portrait of Ptolemy I. All of the portrait coinage appears to have been struck at a Phoenician mint. This type with no reverse control marks appears to be extremely rare as neither Svoronos nor Mørkholm record examples in their corpora, although examples struck from this obverse die (identifiable by the minor die crack on the neck and left field) are shown by Mørkholm. Only one other example of this variety has been offered by any major auction house in the past 15+ years.
