    Description

SELEUCID KINGDOM. Seleucus I Nicator (312-281 BC). AR tetradrachm (26mm, 16.90 gm, 1h).  Seleuceia on the Tigris, ca. 300-296 BC. Head of Heracles right wearing lion skin headdress / ΣΕΛΕΥΚΟΥ, Zeus seated left on low-backed throne, holding eagle and scepter, monogram in field before, I Δ below throne, B in exergue. Cf. SC 117ff (no ΒAΣΙΛΕΩΣ). Cf. Hoover 12i (same). Sharply struck. Nearly Mint State.

The absence of the royal title ΒAΣΙΛΕΩΣ on this coin is puzzling and seems to be unrecorded. There is a B in the exergue in the appropriate place, but no letters follow, and the overall sharpness of the strike precludes the lack of the remaining letters being the result of a weak strike. Perhaps the die engraver started to write the title, became distracted, and never completed it before coins were struck from this reverse die, making it an odd sort of mint error-- an incomplete die.
