SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy (465-405 BC). AR tetradrachm (25mm, 17.23 gm, 6h). Struck ca. 450-440 BC. Charioteer driving walking quadriga right; above, Nike flying right, crowning horses; in exergue, ketos right / ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙ - ΟΝ, diademed head of Arethusa right; hair bound in triple-stranded fillet, wearing whorl earring with two beads descending and pearl necklace with pendant, four dolphins around. Boehringer 571 (V287/R391). SNG ANS 184 (same dies). Pozzi 581 (same dies). Jameson 769 (same dies). Marvelous transitional dies, showing both archaic and classical conventions. Minor flatness on hair band. NGC AU 4/5 - 5/5.
