SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy. Ca. 450-405 BC. AR tetradrachm (24mm, 17.39 gm, 7h). NGC MS 4/5 - 5/5, Fine Style. Struck ca. 450-440 BC. Charioteer driving slow quadriga right; Nike flying right above, crowning horses; ketos right in exergue / ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙ-ΟΝ, diademed head of Arethusa right; hair bound in triple-stranded fillet, wearing hoop earring with two beads, and beaded necklace with pendant; four dolphins around. Boehringer 571 (V287/R391). SNG ANS 184 (same dies). Pozzi 581 (same dies). Jameson 769 (same dies). HGC 2, 1311. Marvelous transitional dies, showing both archaic and classical conventions.
