Description
Sicily, Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny. 485-466 B.C. AR tetradrachm (22 mm, 17.49 g, 10 h). Ca. 480/78-475 B.C. Slow biga with driver right; above, Nike flying right / Diademed head of Arethusa right; around, four dolphins. Boehringer group 3, series VIIIb, 99E [271E] (V64/R187E); SNG ANS -; Randazzo 307-9, and discussion on p. 35. Toned VF, reverse die-break.Boehringer records the obverse die used to strike this coin as "unidentified" because the single specimen known to him was accessible from only a photograph of the reverse die (Renner pl. IV, 53). There were, however, three examples struck from this same reverse die in the Randazzo Hoard of 1980 (CH VII, no. 17), all of which were struck from Boehringer's obverse die V64, as is our coin. Thus, whereas Boehringer had placed this coin in series XI based on stylistic similarities with his reverse die R179, it is actually from series VIIIb, and therefore should be Boehringer 99E instead of 271E.
