    Syria, Coele-Syria. Chalkis ad Libanon. Herod. A.D. 41-48. AE 25 mm (15.67 g, 1 h). Regnal Year 3 (A.D. 43/4). Diademed head of Herod of Chalkis right / Greek inscription within wreath. RPC 4778; TJC 362; AJC suppl. IV, 1; Hendin 561. Near VF, brown patina. Extremely rare.

    Herod of Chalkis was the grandson of the infamous Herod the Great of Judaea. Through his friendship with the Emperor Claudius, he was granted Chalkis (formerly ruled by Ituraean dynasts) as the center of a small kingdom in south Lebanon. Although he never ruled Judaea he had authority to appoint the high priest in Jerusalem. He was succeeded by Agrippa II.
