    Description

Ionia, Lebedos. Circa 160-150 B.C. AR tetradrachm. Head right of Athena wearing triple-crested helmet and earring of a tiny Nike figure/Filleted cornuacopiae with owl between, standing on a club; all within olive wreath. 16.39 g. Amandry (Essays Kraay-Morkholm) 10. AU58 ICG, toned; a superb specimen.
Many cities in Aeolis and Ionia minted these large-flan, Hellenistic tetradrachms beginning in 190 B.C. after the Battle of Magnesia. While the reverses all depicted different types specific to the city, they were nevertheless enclosed in a large wreath, sometimes oak, sometimes laurel. From the use of the wreath, they were termed "stephanephori." We believe they were all minted at a single mint, yet honoring the many cities. Perhaps their use was primarily a ceremonial one. Of all the issues, these rare ones of Lebedos are some of the most detailed and beautiful of the entire series.
