    Description

Judaea. Bar Kokhba War, A.D. 132-135. AR denarius attributed to year 3, A.D. 134/5. Triform bunch of grapes/Two upright trumpets. 3.25 g. Mesh1 208, Mild 153 (these dies). Understriking visible on obverse and reverse (original striking is a Roman denarius of Trajan, originally minted A.D. 103-111; cf. RIC 91-148). AU50 ICG.
All Bar Kokhba War coinage was overstruck on earlier Roman coins. One can imagine the fervor with which the sledge hammer was made to fall on the hated emperor's portrait and reverse pagan deities, overstriking these with charismatic slogans of freedom and religious types. The author of the die corpus of the coinage of the Bar Kokhba War, Leo Mildenberg, was my (P.R.) numismatic mentor and dear friend. Leo established the numismatic department of Bank Leu, and after forty years of intensive work on the Bar Kokhba (sometimes termed the Second Jewish War) series, he scientifically placed all the die combinations in order of striking and enumerated all the known specimens of each variety. Most importantly, Leo gave us an historical perspective of the times as discovered by the numismatic evidence, and an understanding of the minting procedure itself. His wisdom and love of life are sorely missed.
