    Description

Sicily, Syracuse. Hieron II, 275-215 B.C. AR 16 litrai. Diademed and veiled head left of Philistis, wife of Hieron/Walking quadriga driven right by Nike. 12.94 g. SNG ANS 873 (same dies). EF45 ICG, lightly porous.
Greek portraiture on coins was much enhanced by the generals of Alexander the Great, who established their dynasties, partly by communicating their power and wealth by their portrayals on their main coinages. In Syracuse there was a series of forceful likenesses of the various tyrants and their families, this issue being one of the most attractive and desirable.
