Herod Antipas, son of Herod the Great, succeeded his father as ruler of Galilee and Perea, bearing the title of Tetrarch. He appears frequently in the New Testament and is called "that fox" by Jesus. Early in his reign Antipas divorced his Nabataean wife in order to marry the beautiful Herodias, divorced wife of his brother Herod Philip I. The arrangement was denounced by the itinerant holy man John the Baptist and his continued agitation led to his arrest by Antipas. In a famous New Testament passage, Herodias' daughter Salome performed a sensuous dance for Antipas and induced him to execute the Baptist. After the arrest of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem, Pontius Pilate had him sent to Antipas since Jesus was a Galilean and this fell within Antipas' territory. After taunting and mocking Jesus, Antipas returned him to Pilate. In AD 39 Antipas was accused of conspiring against the new emperor Caligula, deposed and exiled to Gaul along with Herodias; the date of his death is unknown.
