Judaea. Bar Kochba Revolt. 132-135 C.E. AE 23 mm (8.65 g, 12 h). Year 2 (133/4 C.E.)(?). Seven-branched palm tree with two bunches of dates; paleo-Hebrew inscription "Shimo" across fields / Vine leaf and tendril; Illegible paleo-Hebrew inscription around. Cf. Mildenberg 64; cf. TJC 260a; cf. Hendin 708. Crude VF, dark green patina with light sandy highlights. This piece is impressive for its crude execution, which suggests the great pressures under which Bar Kochba's mint personnel worked or a need for coin prompting acceptance of unofficial imitations. Although the legend is obscure, the distinctly trilobate nature of the vine leaf seems to indicate that this coin was intended as an issue of the second year of the revolt.
