    Description

Judaea. Bar Kochba Revolt. 132-135 C.E. AR sela (25 mm, 13.53 g, 1 h). Year 2 (133/4 C.E.). Jerusalem Temple facade with ark and scrolls within; cross above; Paleo-Hebrew inscription "Jerusalem" / Lulav with ethrog (citron) to left; Paleo-Hebrew inscription "Year two of the freedom of Israel". Mildenberg 17 (O4/R11); TJC 230; AJC II 13a; Hendin 688. Toned VF.

This quintessential coin type of the Bar Kochba series bears the only numismatic representation of the Jerusalem Temple although it is unclear whether it is meant to depict the Herodian temple destroyed by the Romans in 70 C.E. or a new temple longed for by the messianic Shimon bar Kochba and his followers. The reverse looks back to the Sukkot related types of the First Revolt.
