Description

Judaea. Bar Kochba Revolt. 132-135 C.E. AR sela (27 mm, 14.67 g, 12 h). Undated (attributed to year 3, 134/5 C.E.). Jerusalem Temple facade with ark and scrolls within; star above; Paleo-Hebrew inscription "Shimon" / Lulav with ethrog (citron) to left; Paleo-Hebrew inscription "For the freedom of Jerusalem". Mildenberg 85 (O12/R44'); TJC 267; AJC II 52; Hendin 711. Toned VF, minor obverse die shift, dark deposits.

Struck in the final disastrous year of the Bar Kochba Revolt, this sela (or tetradrachm) is notable for the inscription referring to the freedom of Jerusalem rather than all of Israel. This may possibly be taken as an indicator of the lowered expectations of the losing rebels as the final Roman onslaught loomed. The star may or may not refer to Shimon's messianic title ben Kosiba ("Son of the Star").
