Judaea. First Jewish War. 66-70 C.E. AR shekel (21 mm, 13.53 g, 11 h). Jerusalem, year 1 (66/7 C.E.). Chalice; date above; Paleo-Hebrew inscription "Shekel of Israel" / Three pomegranates on stem; Paleo-Hebrew inscription "Jerusalem the Holy". TJC 187; AJC II 3; Hendin 655; Kadman 2; Bromberg I 59 (same obv. die). Good VF, toned.

An early issue of the Jewish rebels featuring types related to the Jerusalem Temple and its high priests. The propaganda of Jewish religious and political autonomy is enhanced by the use of archaic paleo-Hebrew legends.
