Description

Judaea, Herodian Kingdom. Agrippa II. 56-95 C.E. AE 25 mm (12.01 g, 6 h). Caesarea Maritima or Rome(?), year 25 (84/5 C.E.). Laureate bust of Domitian right / Square altar. RPC 2266; TJC 162; AJC 26; Hendin 606. Good VF, brown patina, very high relief. Exceptional for the issue.

The mint attribution for this coin and several related series is controversial. The quality of the engraving, Roman iconography, and the use of Latin legends (but Greek dates!) has led some to suggest that they were produced in Rome for use in the Herodian kingdom. On the other hand, it has been countered that the fabric is similar to that of issues attributed to Caesarea Maritima. The true identity of the mint will remain somewhat mysterious unless new information is discovered.
